Laurie Ryan was born on the Canadian prairies. Growing up on a farm, she gained an early appreciation for the changing seasons. She loved realism in landscapes, but strived to show a looser, more impressionistic version in her later work.
A large part of Laurie's work includes portraiture and animals. Being able to portray personality and feelings in an image, was very rewarding.
Laurie began painting seriously in 2012, when she retired and was living in Mississippi. She took many workshops and classes in Oil, Acrylic and Water Colour - enjoying each discipline equally.
After moving to West Kelowna in 2014, she continued her artistic journey, continuing to take classes and workshops with the many talented artists both in the province, and the rest of Canada.
Laurie was an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Central Okanagan Chapter. Her work can be found at New Moon Gallery in West Kelowna.
Laurie tragically passed away June 23, 2018.
What began with crayons and colouring books, became a life long creative journey that took many forms.
During her career days, and later as a full time Mom of two very active boys, her interest in art never diminished, but the time she could devote to it certainly did!
When she became an empty nester, living in Ocean Springs Mississippi, she then had time to devote her full attention to her artistic passion - painting. Ocean Springs has a vibrant arts community, and she immersed herself in learning oils, acrylic and water colour, from the exceptional artists she met in the South. She especially loved landscapes and portraits. Here in the Okanagan - art inspiration was easy to find!
She had been influenced by the Old Masters, of course, but continued to be inspired by the many talented artists of today - learning is a life long journey.
Laurie was an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Central Okanagan Chapter, and painted with various art groups around Kelowna. Her work can be found in the New Moon Gallery in West Kelowna.

CONTRIBUTING ARTIST FOR GCWR
Laurie was part of this NonProfit organization since its inception in 2013. She sketched animal images for TeeShirts and Stationary items, that they use as part of their Fundraising initiative.
With Coastal storms and Hurricanes being a regular occurrence in Mississippi, wild animals sustain injuries or become orphaned.
This group of dedicated volunteers and professionals rehab these animals and return them to their natural habitat. Laurie was happy to help them in my small way.
